Teradata and IMC Exponentially Accelerate Genetic Research
Advanced computer technology and data mining uncover life’s mysteries
AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Working cooperatively, Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), and Information
Management Consultants (IMC) have enabled researchers and scientists to exponentially accelerate the pace of genetic
research on mice brains that may lead to the understanding of many human conditions, including brain diseases and forms
of cancer.
“Instead of taking a year to study one gene, data mining enables us to study the potential interactions of 13,000 mice
genes in just one week,” said Dr. Carrolee Barlow, scientist and adjunct facility member at Salk Institute.
“From this course of study, we hope to more quickly learn how to treat certain diseases in people.” With the most
advanced computer technology and the Teradata® Warehouse Miner data mining application, medical researchers are able to
search for patterns as they sort through massive amounts of genetic data found in various regions of mice brains. The
analysis of these patterns provides new insights about the genetic sources of disease and how drugs can effectively
treat those diseases.
“Teradata data mining technology enables scientists to quickly perform complex analysis on massive volumes of genetic
data. For years, this technology has been used by the largest commercial data warehouses in the retail,
telecommunications, finance and transportation industries to better understand customer behavior and business trends,”
said Alan Chow, senior vice president, Teradata research and development.
“Working with IMC, Teradata offers a truly high-performance system that can store, manage and analyse the large volumes
of genetic data generated by today’s dedicated researchers.” About Information Management Consultants (IMC) Information
