Oracle9i Database Release 2 Significantly Reduces Time, Cost and Complexity for Database Administrators

Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world's largest enterprise software company, today announced the results of a new database manageability study showing dramatic reductions in time and cost for day-to-day Database Administration using Oracle9i Database Release 2. Oracle Senior Vice President Andrew Mendelsohn is expected to highlight the results of the study to an audience of more than two thousand DBAs during his keynote address today at IOUG Live! in Orlando, Florida. Conducted by independent research firm, Rauch Associates, Inc., the study found that Oracle administrators required 54 percent less time than their IBM DB2 counterparts to perform equivalent tasks. In addition, Oracle9i Database was found to be significantly easier to manage, requiring 41 percent fewer administrative steps than IBM DB2. "The results of our study showed that, for the measured tasks, increased efficiency for Oracle9i Database administrators could result in cost savings of up to $37,054 per administrator in the first year of ownership, and would be expected to continue to accrue in subsequent years.

Manageability cost differences of this magnitude continue to be a major database purchasing requirement for customers," said Ken Rauch, CEO at Rauch Associates, Inc. "Choosing the right database that will make daily database administration tasks simpler, faster, and less error-prone for DBAs directly impacts a company's ability to save costs in IT staffing and management."

According to the study titled, "Comparison of Management Cost of Ownership: Oracle9i Database Release 2 and IBM DB2 v8.1," Oracle9i Database Release 2 received high marks in the areas of self-tuning, simplification of complex management functions, increased automation of routine tasks, and sophisticated management tools. The study measured the management costs for time and effort required to complete 12 basic database management tasks in the areas of database setup and configuration, ongoing database administration, performance tuning, and backup and recovery. Each task was scored in terms of complexity and time required for completion. Study highlights include:

· Oracle9i Database Release 2 required 41 percent fewer administrative steps than IBM DB2 V8.1.

· Oracle9i Database Release 2 required 54 percent less time to perform equivalent tasks.

· Oracle9i Database Release 2 administrators require only 55 percent of the time used by their IBM DB2 peers to manage equivalent workloads.

· Cost benefits from increased efficiency of Oracle9i Database Release 2 administrators will result in savings of $37,054 per administrator in the first year of ownership and will continue to accrue in subsequent years.
