More delays mean more dolphin deaths
More delays mean more dolphin deaths
WWF is extremely disappointed that measures to protect the critically endangered North Island Hector’s dolphin have been delayed again.
The Ministry of Fisheries announced today that a decision on protection would be delayed due to further consultation.
“The fishing season began on 1 October, and there is still no government protection against commercial set netting”, says WWF New Zealand Director of Conservation Chris Howe.
“Measures were supposed to be announced in July.”
“The Ministry claims this ‘extra consultation’ is occurring because in error, it claims, it did not release its Ministerial advice paper to stakeholders.”
“Firstly, this was not an error – the Minister decided the advice paper would not be released.”
“Secondly, release of the paper should not be cause for delaying the decision or consulting further.”
“The Minister of Fisheries should take immediate action to fully protect the North Island Hector’s dolphin while consultation takes place.”
