Nestlé Stand On GE Applauded

The Chairman of the Life Sciences Network, Dr William Rolleston, today applauded the public position taken by the Nestlé company on the use of genetically engineered products in its food manufacturing.

“Nestlé is to be congratulated for standing up for science-based risk assessment and sound regulation rather than pandering to the fear-mongers.

“The company sets an example for many others in the food manufacturing and retailing sector.

“It is clear food products which are derived from gene technology are at least as safe as food products from other production methods. Therefore, to make a decision not to use them, is a nonsense.

“Greenpeace and the other anti-GM activists are involved in a global campaign to make people fearful about the food they eat. In recent days we’ ve heard the GE-Free people in New Zealand try to drive up fear about the oils which are used to cook fish and chips – all because some of the oils may well be derived from genetically modified plants. That there can be no unusual harm from such oils doesn’t stop the activists trying to scare people.

“The unscientific basis of this fear mongering is what is truly scary, and we need more examples of food manufacturers who are prepared to stand up to the attempted bullying of the anti-GM activists,” concluded Dr Rolleston
