LSN Refutes Green Party Claims That Organic Food Is Better

“Contrary to the assertions of Green Party politicians organic food cannot be shown to be healthier or safer than conventional food or food from gene technology,” the Chairman of the Life Sciences Network, Dr William Rolleston, said today.

“It is also incorrect to say that organic food is free of pesticide and herbicide residues. The truth of the matter is that organic farmers have tolerance levels which means their products are not free of pesticides and herbicides. They try to control the use of agrochemicals on their land but they have a list of approved chemical products which can be used.

“In addition, many organic producers use highly toxic copper sulphate products as a fungicide; they use Rotenone which has clearly established dangers for human health, and when organic animals need them for health reasons they use a wide variety of treatments such as drenches and antibiotics.

“Organic producers often have to decide whether they will try to treat their crops and animals against pests and infections or whether they will let nature run its course. The result is scientifically recorded higher incidences of naturally occurring toxins in and on organic crops.

“To say that existing research is flawed because it doesn’t show what organic producers want is really putting the blind eye to the telescope. Organic producers need to accept there no proven health or nutrition advantages to be derived from consuming organic produce.

“That fact that some consumers prefer to eat organically produced food is not proof that it is any better,” concluded Dr Rolleston
