Intel®Pentium® 4 Processor Technology Comes To Mobile PCs
Intel® NetBurst™ Micro-Architecture, New Chipset And Advanced Power Management Features Deliver Leap in Performance
AUCKLAND, Tuesday 5 March, 2002 –– Intel Corporation today announced it is bringing its flagship Pentium® 4 processor technology to mobile PCs for the first time. With the introduction of the mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 processor-M, designed specifically for mobile computers, PC makers are delivering full-size and thin-and-light systems with outstanding performance, long battery life and wireless capabilities.
Intel also announced the mobile Intel® 845chipset family, supporting double data rate (DDR) memory. Together, the new processor and chipset deliver a significant boost in performance while maintaining low average power consumption, helping to deliver extended battery life. The new products are shipping in volume worldwide with systems available from leading PC makers.
“The introduction of Pentium 4 processor-M brings to mobile computing the performance users have come to expect from the Pentium 4 processor,” said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president, Mobile Platforms Group. “Together with the Intel 845 chipset and advanced power management technologies, this delivers an optimal balance of high performance and long battery life for today’s mobile PCs.”
On-The-Go Performance, Connectivity
The new mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 processor-M is designed to enable both consumers and business users to take full advantage of processing-intensive applications such as: audio and video encoding, digital imaging, speech recognition, 3D content creation, games, multimedia and multi-tasking environments.
The mobile Pentium 4 processor-M includes the performance to run several productivity applications simultaneously while also running background programs such as encryption, compression, virus scan, client management, and Virtual Private Networks. Several of the new mobile PCs using the mobile Pentium 4 processor-M include built-in wireless capabilities such as 802.11b and Bluetooth.* The mobile Pentium 4 processor-M helps to extend a users wireless mobility because it has the ability to operate in energy efficient modes, while providing fast, seamless file and multimedia transfers.
Mainstream Mobile PCs Get Performance and Long Battery Life
The mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor-M at 1.7 GHz is the fastest mobile processor available today for mobile PCs. High performance is provided by the Intel® NetBurst™ Micro-Architecture, consisting of: a 400 MHz processor system bus, Hyper Pipelined Technology, an Execution Trace Cache, Rapid Execution Engine, and 144 Streaming SIMD instructions (SSE2). It also includes a 512k on-die L2 cache.
The mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor-M operates at low voltage, allowing it to consume minimal power. Low power consumption is made possible using the Intel® Enhanced Intel SpeedStepTM technology, which automatically switches between Maximum Performance Mode and Battery Optimised Mode based on the application demand. A technology called Deeper Sleep Alert State allows the processor to operate as low as 1 volt, and reach power levels as low as half a watt  even while running software applications. To help lower thermal design power, the mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor-M supports an enhanced version of the Intel Mobile Voltage Positioning. The combination of these power management technologies helps to extend battery life by making it possible for the processor to consume less than two watts of average power. **
The Intel 845 Chipset Goes Mobile
The Intel® 845 Chipset family includes two new chipsets, the 845MP and 845MZ. Both are designed, validated and optimised for the mobile Pentium 4 Processor-M. The Intel 845MP supports external graphics and is available today. The 845MZ will be available later this year.
The Intel mobile 845MP offers external AGP 4X graphics support, a 400MHz processor system bus, and DDR 266 MHz SDRAM for up to 1GB memory support. The new chipset also supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology, Deeper Sleep Alert State, a low-power graphics power management mode and an internal timer that automatically turns off the chipset clock when the chipset is inactive.
Additionally, the Intel 845MP chipset is designed using Intel’s most advanced Flip-Chip Ball Grid Array packaging, supports 6 USB ports and supports Intel’s I/O Hub Architecture providing a high bandwidth pipe that delivers fast communications and reduces latency time for I/O operations.
Specifications and Pricing
Designed on Intel’s 0.13-micron process technology, the mobile Pentium 4 Processor-M is available today at speeds of 1.7 and 1.6 GHz. Using the automatic capability of the Enhanced Intel Speed Step technology, the mobile Pentium 4 Processor-M runs at up to 1.7 GHz at 1.3 volts (Maximum Performance Mode). In Battery Optimised Mode, both processors run at 1.2 GHz at 1.2 volts, consuming less than 2 watts of average power.** Thinner mobile PC designs are made possible due to Intel’s small Micro-Flip Chip Pin Grid Array (uFCPGA) packaging.
In 1,000-unit quantities, the mobile Pentium 4 processor-M at 1.7 and 1.6 GHz are priced at $US508 and $US401 respectively. In 1,000 unit quantities the Intel 845MP chipset is $US43.00.
