Top PC Tips For The Holidays……

AUCKLAND, December 18, 2001 – With holidays looming there a number of ‘quick and simple’ things you can do before you leave for the break.....which will make life easier on your return.

According to Gareth Martin, gen-i Technical Analyst and Online help-desk technician, most of these relate to the ever increasing use of email. “We’re becoming more dependent on the use of email to communicate with customers, clients and suppliers,” says Gareth. “It makes sense to spend some time organising this and other related areas, before leaving for the holiday break.”

Top PC tips before you leave the office

1. Set up an ‘out-of-office’ email message with the date of your return.

2. If you require access to work related email while on holiday, make sure you have remote access set up before you leave for your break - don’t expect for this to be done on the last day!

3. Auto-file your emails for easy management on your return – click on ‘tools’ in Outlook and use the ‘rules wizard’ to sort emails by sender, subject line, etc.

4. Advise your manager of contact people in your absence (personal / professional) and also contact email/phone in case of emergency.

5. Assign your regular tasks to those team members available (if applicable).

6. Contact key clients/co-workers with a courtesy email/phone-call about your availability - nothing worse than needing to get hold of someone to find they have already left for a month's holiday!

7. Give someone else access to your PC mailbox if necessary - or auto forward expected emails to others.

8. Lock up your laptop. Laptops are easy picking for thieves who are often at their busiest over Christmas. Likewise, take home personal possessions and valuables. Also, don’t leave your password on a post-it note near your PC or you might find that your Intellectual Property gets ripped off as well.

9. Clean up files on your desktop (don't need it, then trash it) – the system will work better as a result when you get back from holiday.

10. Forget about work and enjoy yourself.
