Kerikeri Tamarillo Site, Fumigation Off
26 October, 2001
Fumigation off at GM tamarillo site
After consultation and inspection of the GM tamarillo trial site at HortResearch Kerikeri GE Free Northland representatives asked HortResearch not to proceed with fumigation of the ground.
John Shaw of HortResearch and Pat Clark representing GE Free Northland, inspected the site on Friday morning (26 Oct).
Dr Shaw said he is delighted with the outcome and feels it is consistent with HortResearch’s position that the site has never been a threat. HortResearch originally agreed to fumigate the site to address public concern arising from the trial.
No tamarillo seedlings have emerged since the trial was completed in February this year, and MAF will continue monitoring of the site for any emerging seedlings until 2003.
The trail ran for three years from January 1998, the trees were cut down in November 2000 and the stumps were taken from the ground.
