Sneak Preview Of Intel® 845 Chipset For Pentium® 4 Processor–Based Platform At Computex Taiwan ‘2001

During a keynote at Computex Taiwan ‘2001, Intel Corporation demonstrated for the first time its upcoming Intel® 845 chipset for Pentium® 4 processor based-platforms. The Intel 845 chipset is a flexible chipset designed to take advantage of existing platform technologies (PC133 SDRAM, AGP4x) with the Pentium 4 processor. It is scheduled for delivery in the 2nd half of 2001.

“Pentium® 4 processor-based platforms with the Intel® 850 chipset are seeing widespread adoption at mainstream price points,” said William E. Siu, Vice President and General Manager, Desktop Platforms Group, Intel Corporation. “The upcoming Intel® 845 chipset will deliver an increased range of system price points for the Pentium 4 processor platforms for both consumer and business users.”

The Pentium 4 processor with NetBurst™ microarchitecture technology was designed from the ground up to deliver performance for various Internet-related functions, including music and video encoding, as well as graphic-intensive applications for consumer. The processor also provides the performance, longevity and return on investment that business users need. At the Intel booth, Pentium 4 processor-based systems were connected to a variety of digital entertainment and productivity devices to illustrate how PC function can be extended and Pentium 4 processor-based systems have become the center of the digital world.

Following Intel’s keynote demonstration, many vendors displayed motherboards supporting the Intel 845 chipset at the exhibition floor. Intel expects production of motherboards using the 845 chipset to begin ramping in 2H'01. DDR support for Intel 845 chipset targeted for Q1 ’02 depending on platform and industry readiness.
