Hitwise introduces new measures of success for online strategists

Hitwise introduces user visits and ‘site stickiness’ to range of metrics for comparing website performance

14 February 2001 – Online competitive intelligence service Hitwise (www.hitwise.co.nz) this week launched a range of new metrics to compare website performance across more than 90,000 sites. In addition to page requests and market share of traffic, website owners and online marketers can now rank websites according to user visits and average visit duration (“site stickiness”).

While page requests have largely been accepted as the standard unit of measurement, Hitwise has introduced these additional measures to provide marketers with a comprehensive evaluation of online competitiveness.

Executive Director of Hitwise, Mr Adrian Giles, said since marketers develop strategies for a wide variety of business objectives, it’s important to be able to compare sites against a range of criteria.

User visits will indicate the number of times a person has visited a website then left. Average visit duration, or “site stickiness” will indicate the average amount of time a person spends on a site.

Mr Giles said there would be some significant differences in rankings when using different criteria to measure sites.

“Marketers can now determine which strategies are better at driving visitors compared with those that encourage people to stay on a site,” Mr Giles said.

Rankings by user visits and average visit duration will be available across each of Hitwise’s 130 categories from today.
