Commission Continues To Hear From Environmental Groups

Wellington - 2 February 2001: Formal Hearings of environmental groups accorded "interested person" status by the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification will continue next week.

Scheduled to make presentations in Week 10 of Formal Hearings are: 7 February 2001: 1. Pacific Institute of Resource Management 2. Friends of the Earth 8 February 2001: 1. Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society (Auckland Central branch) 2. Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society (Marlborough branch) 3. Royal Forest & Bird Protection Society (Nelson/Tasman branch) 9 February 2001: 1. Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand (ECO)

Copies of the submissions and expert witnesses' briefs of evidence can be found at www.gmcommission.govt.nz.

Members of the public are welcome to view the proceedings and transcripts of the hearings will be posted on the Commission website.

As part of its Maori Consultation Programme, a regional hui will be held at Omahu Pa in Hastings on Saturday, 10 February 2001.

Formal Hearings will also be held in Auckland on 15 and 16 February 2001 (Soil & Health Association of NZ, Save Animals From Exploitation and Greenpeace NZ) and in Christchurch on 23 February 2001 (Canterbury Commercial Organic Group, Dr Patrick Moore (on behalf of NZ Life Sciences Network) and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu).

A Youth Forum will be held in Wellington on 5 March 2001. Deadline for competition entries and registration forms is 5pm, Monday 12 February 2001.
