Investment Company Achieves High Returns From Virtual Private Net Work Speed And Security
News Release CBR Accounting Services implements LanRover(tm) Virtual Private Network to achieve cost savings for remote access to network resources
AUCKLAND, 29 November 2000 - CBR Accounting Services, a subsidiary of Wilson Investment Management Ltd, has realised the benefits of a secure remote network and high-speed connection between its offices with the implementation of the LanRover(tm) Virtual Private Network (VPN) Express 6.7.
Through the wide area network the LanRover VPN utilises the Internet to enable connection to their multiple remote sites. The company's remote users now have high-speed access to data and the ability to connect with each other effectively.
"We had four remote company sites and three home users across Wellington, requiring sound and real-time access to our business critical financial database, in addition to communicating efficiently with each other," says Christine Amos, Accountant for CBR Accounting Services. "Working on a RAS dial-up system, which was not fully utilised due to its limitations and inefficiency, each user was employing a different dial up method. It was also extremely slow and unsecure and when the connection wasn't timing out, people simply couldn't access the information they required."
These restraints for CBR also meant that staff at the head office often had to fax the required information and email was the primary means of exchanging information between offices.
According to Ron van Twuiver, Business Development Director for Network Pro NZ Limited, an Intel Network Communication Provider (INCP), CBR's decision to invest in a new network arose when one of the business's subsidiaries looked at moving to a new office. "Their criteria when selecting a new network was simple - they wanted something fast and secure."
Network Pro had a strong working relationship with CBR, having implemented a number of projects including installation of a file server, terminal server, portable network and providing network support for three years.
"The LanRover VPN provided the best fit for the company's requirements," continues Ron. "Specifically designed for small to medium sized businesses such as CBR, it's a straightforward installation, offers unmatched speed and accommodates communication requirements with ease. The client software is easy to use, with a familiar graphical interface enabling users to understand and configure the client. Further, beyond lowering the cost of remote access, state-of-the-art communications security is offered with a firewall as part of the complete boxed solution.
"We customised the VPN solution using new ASDL technology, JetStream, as a dial-up connection to the Internet and a firewall as a secure connection method to data. The system was implemented over two days with just one technician. With no downtime, the process had zero impact on the business's daily operations."
The system runs on Windows* 2000 Terminal Services, connecting each site. The network now allows all of CBR's affiliated companies to link a VPN session to the main server running the company's financial applications - with a speed that is equivalent to being locally connected. Further, the VPN is able to accommodate up to fifty continuous connections.
"The efficiency and cost effectiveness we are realising is proving invaluable for our business, " says Christine. "Our invoicing process and information sharing has improved significantly, with all sites able to access the database at the same time. The network affords real value for money compared to the alternate leased line and frame relay connectivity.
"The support from Network Pro has been excellent and since the implementation we have not experienced any glitches with the LanRover VPN. With the user capabilities, we are able to grow without concern about the effect it will have on our network. We have already added two new sites since completing the project."
