WHICH GRASS DOES COROMANDEL WANT TO BE FAMOUS FOR?

The people of Coromandel have to decide next Saturday which kind of grass they want to be famous for - pasture or marijuana, says Terry Dunleavy, chairman of Bluegreens Northern, a task force established to advise the National Party on environmental and heritage issues.

"For me this is a heritage issue, as my mother was born in Tapu, and my grandfather was a wellknown Coromandel identity," said Mr Dunleavy. "The Coromandel peninsula itself has its own rich history, and the electorate now includes some of the best farming land in the country.

"I cannot believe that the inheritors of the traditions established by the gold miners, fisherfolk and farming pioneers of the early years would want to besmirch the reputation of Coromandel and the Hauraki Plains by voting in such a way as to send to Parliament a representative of a party which wants to decriminalise marijuana and has among its leading list candidates people who have shown such blatant disregard for the law of the land."
