YOUNG NATS QUICK TO SEE THE REAL CONTENDER IN WELLINGTON CENTRAL
Wellington Central Independent candidate Lea Barker is delighted by the Young Nats press release stating that they will support National with their party vote and support Annabel Young as their list MP.
Significantly absent from their press release is any indication of support for Richard Prebble as an electorate candidate.
'The real contender in what media have dubbed a ''two horse race'' is parliamentary democracy - the right of registered electors to vote for the candidates they see standing before them.
'A vote for either Prebble or Hobbs is a vote for someone down the bottom of their party lists,' says Barker.
She will be working towards persuading the review of the MMP voting system to specify that candidates for electorate seats may not also be on their party lists.
This will complement the changes already made to deal with MPs' party hopping, adopted by the House of Representatives themselves in their Standing Orders, and help ensure that elections deliver to Parliament a true reflection of each electorate's choice.
