Millennium Event Mixes Old And New
A millennium event which mixes history and the heritage of the Hutt Valley with New Zealand’s rich cultural life is set to literally fire up on New Years’ Eve.
Hutt City Council Mayor John Terris said the harbour celebration, which included a re-enactment of the legend of the creation of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington harbour) and lighting of Matiu Island, was something the Hutt City Council was looking forward to.
“We have been trying to find something special to mark the dawn of the new millennium, and this event, organised in association with the Wellington Tenths Trust and other local authorities, is going to be very auspicious,” Mayor Terris said.
“It is also a great chance to reinforce our relationship with Maori and make the new millennium one of multi-cultural co-operation. The local Maori are to be congratulated on this fine idea, and I am very much in support of it.”
Hutt City Council will consider making the event it’s official Year 2000 project at a meeting on October 26.
