Ignore Lolita Hysteria
The Christian Heritage Party is minding other people's business again with their stickybeak calls to ban the Adrian Lyne film adaptation of Nabokov's classic novel Lolita. "These intolerant ignoramuses are at once both ludicrous and frightening," said Libertarianz Spokesman Peter Cresswell today.
He said that anyone who has read the novel - widely renowned as a classic of the 20th century - or seen the 1997 and 1962 versions of the film will know that it does not glorify the abuse of children. And anyone who has not read it has no business criticising the film for content he can only guess at. The film itself can hardly be said to reinforce abuse, but is instead highly critical of a pathetic man unable to handle temptation and lost love in his youth.
We should note that no criminal acts were committed in the creation of the film, All of the actors consented to their participation including Dominique Swain - the now 19 year old girl who played Lolita - and her parents. Dominique had no sexual contact with any of the actors onscreen or off. Even those scenes implying nudity were carried out by an adult double.
"Mr Capill appears not so concerned about sexual abuse of children - which does occur in real life and is a revolting crime - but instead with the suppression of a film of which he does not approve. The response to him and to others who find the film offensive is simple," says Cresswell. "Stay out of the cinema!"
