NZers Stay Out of East Timor!
Libertarianz Deputy Leader Richard McGrath today urged the implementation of the rule of law in East Timor, but added he doesn't expect to see this from either the militia-supporting warmongers of Indonesia, or the frighteningly incompetent UN. And he hopes it will not be attempted by New Zealanders.
"The savage brutality unleashed in East Timor demonstrates what happens when laws upholding the rights of citizens are no longer enforced. UN bungling demonstrates that it is protection of rights that is crucial to liberty, not the implementation of starry eyed notions of 'democracy'."
"Action should certainly be taken to protect the lives and property of East Timorese civilians, but not," he says, "at the expense of the money and lives of New Zealanders. The soldiers and taxpayers of New Zealand should not be forced to sacrifice themselves in another country's civil war. Let those keen on helping the people of East Timor do so by donating their own money, or let them go over as mercenaries should they wish to."
Dr McGrath went on to say: "My party believes in the basic human right to retaliate when attacked. I suggest that there is an excellent case to be made for Timorese retaliation against the UN, whose incompetent interventions have wreaked wholesale carnage across the globe, from Somalia to Kosovo - and now East Timor. But I see no case for New Zealand troops to be there getting shot at."
