For those who question the Government's gloss on APEC

A conference that challenges the Government's glossy representation of APEC is to be held at Auckland University from Tuesday the 7th to Thursday the 9th of September.

Apart from offering a critique of APEC, conference workshops and speakers of national and international renown, will present empowering models for people and earth centred development. These will encompass issues relates to youth, women. the environment and indigenous peoples in particularly as well as covering the areas of health, housing, education, justice, alternative economic futures, community banking and spirituality.

Thus Hazel Henderson from USA, an internationally acclaimed economist who shared the 1996 Global Citizen award with Nobelist A. Perez Esquivel of Argentina, will speak on "Building a win-win world", Marilyn Waring will speak on "Beyond Growth" Marissa de Guzman (Philippines) will speak on "APEC to ashes", and Marion Wood CEO of the YWCA will speak on "APEC-the morality of the marketplace". Other speakers include a panel of youth representatives, Sir Paul Reeves, Sukhi Turner, Jeanette Fitzsimons, Dr Pita Sharples, Rod Oram, Sohail Inayatullah a Brisbane-based futurist and Del Wihongi.

Workshops will focus particularly on alternative models.20 These include Auckland criminal lawyers Helen Bowen and Jim Boyack on "Restorative Justice", Brisbane-based futurist Sohail Inayatullah and Makere Harawira "Designing alternative economic futures", Bill Murphy on Housing options and Phillida Bunkle and John Lepper on "Healthy communities versus private greed".

Further details about the conference can be obtained from our website www.prout.org/apec which despite its clear opposition has a link from the Government's official website.

The cost of the conference for 3 days is $75 (waged) or $60 (unwaged). Day registrations are $30 (waged) $20 (unwaged). Accomodation is available at the AIT marae - 3 days including breakfast and an evening meal cost $60. Registrations can be sent to 51 Sussex St, Grey Lynn, Auckland or paid on the day. Each day will commence at 9.00am although on Tuesday the 7th there will be a Maori welcome starting at 8.30pm.
