Brain Drain Bribery

Brain Drain Bribery
"The 'Five Steps' package trumpeted today by the government is another case of politicians trying to bribe us with our own money," says Libertarianz Spokesman Peter Cresswell. "Expect to see Ministers posing for photos with scientists in white coats, while extolling taxpayer funded efforts to increase the number of students studying science and technology."
"It is certainly true that New Zealand could do with more graduates in Science and Engineering and fewer in Feminist Anthropology," says Cresswell, "however the answer is not taxpayer funded science scholarships but the reduction of tax and regulation to allow more people to set up businesses and create real jobs."
"Observe that businesses and workers will be taxed even more to fund this scheme, making it still more difficult for both new and already successful scolarship schemes to flourish. The Food Industry for example - New Zealand' s largest export industry - was struggling five years ago to get student numbers in Food Technology courses. Yet this was turned around by the Industry itself without the dubious help offered by government. Corporate sponsorships, scholarships provided by the Institute of Food and Science Technology, and the efforts of food professionals through out the country have seen Food Technology enrolments rocket.
"What is needed is not more government interference,"says Cresswell, "but less. Libertarianz would keep government's thieving hand from your pocket, and allow businesses to get on with their jobs."
