Published: Mon 8 May 2023 11:30 AM
The New Zealand Food Network (NZFN) recently surveyed its food hubs (food rescue organisations, iwi, foodbanks and charities) about the state of their communities and the findings revealed -Since Covid hit, there has been a 165% increase in the number of people receiving food support.Over two thirds (69%) of the food hubs surveyed are feeding more people than they were in 2020.The top 3 reasons for requesting food support were the cost of living crisis (88%), closely followed by low individual / household income (70%), and unemployment (65%).
NZFN is currently providing food support to nearly half a million (480,104) people per month through its partner food hubs, but demand continues to skyrocket as living conditions continue to tighten.
