3rd Of March School Strike For Climate
This year, politicians will stand for the leadership of our country. As young people today, we are accustomed to doomsday climate headlines and “once in 100 year” phenomena. We have heard all the big kōrero, but where is all the meaningful action?
We believe that the oscillating Red / Blue government we have been raised by has proven that they are unwilling to do the job effectively for both People and Papatūānuku. It's time for something different. It's time that politics caught up. We are asking all of Aotearoa to help us in demanding a REAL change in our government. We are calling the Ministers of Aotearoa to stand up for what is truly right, or move aside.
Aotearoa New Zealand is one of the signatory countries for the Paris Agreement, a legally binding treaty on climate change signed by many nations across the globe in 2015 at COP21. If we do not meet our emission reduction targets, our nation will be liable, and we will have to pay the price.
Yet, despite our government committing us to this contract, year after year since signing this agreement our emissions have increased. We have declared a climate emergency, we have climate action frameworks, and we have emissions reduction schemes.
Despite all the declarations, frameworks, and schemes, our leadership has failed to create the LAW and POLICY that would meaningfully manage industry polluters, adequately tax wealth, or create equitable community climate resilience.
Young people in Aotearoa today are watching our parents, employers, and leadership make daily decisions that will ensure we will face - not only unprecedented environmental uncertainty - but a hefty bill under the Paris Agreement as well. Give us our future back.
We are sick of lip service. We are sick of the talk. We are asking the government to FOLLOW THROUGH ON CLIMATE ACTION.
