Tūpuna Maunga Authority Begins Integrated Management Plan Amendment Process

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority has called for public submissions on the proposed amendment to its award-winning Integrated Management Plan 2016.

The new section details proposed ecological restoration projects (including the planting of native species and removal of non-native trees) for:

  • Ōwairaka / Te Ahi Kā a Rakataura / Mt Albert (the Ōwairaka project)
  • Pukewīwī / Puketāpapa / Mt Roskill
  • Ōtāhuhu / Mt Richmond
  • Te Tātua a Riukiuta / Big King

This follows the recent Court of Appeal decision that upheld the substance of the Authority’s project under challenge but created new law as to the legal process. This case law did not exist when the 13 tribes of the Tāmaki Collective agreed in 2012 to the legal regime governing the administration of the Tūpuna Maunga.

The Authority remains pleased that the Courts have recognised that the Reserves Act legislation must be read in the context of the Treaty settlement (Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau Collective Redress Act 2014).

How to make a submission and to find the proposed Amendment to the Integrated Management Plan can be found on the Tūpuna Maunga Authority website, https://maunga.nz/plans-policies-and-procedures/. Submissions must be received by 5pm, Saturday 8 October 2022.
