A 1.5degreeC warming pathway means coal has to go: Coal Action Network

Coal Action Network Aotearoa today welcomed the Government’s proposed climate change bill that recognises the need for the world to keep warming to 1.5degC, warning that this means coal has to go.

“Coal is the dirtiest of the fossil fuels, and this legislation means no new coal mines, no new coal-fired boilers for Fonterra - and a rapid phase out of all coal burning across the country, including at Huntly,” said Cindy Baxter of CANA.

“The Government has recognised that the climate is in crisis, but the devil will be in the detail of this legislation” she said.

CANA will be studying the bill in detail and will be actively involved in the submission process.
