Whangārei set to host the next Ngāpuhi Hapū Hui

26 March 2019

Whangārei is set to host the next Ngāpuhi Hapū Hui on 27 April 2019 at Te Puna o Te Mātauranga Marae, Raumanga Valley Road.

This Hui comes following the successful Ngāpuhi Hapū Hui hosted at Kohewhata Marae in January this year which saw over 300 Hapū members gather to discuss a pathway forward for Ngāpuhi.

Over 70% of Ngāpuhi Hapū voted no to the Evolved Ngāpuhi Mandate Proposal prepared by Te Rōpu Tūhono. “Tūhono process is over, as Hapū we are now reconciling internally how to move forward, the Ngāpuhi Hapū Hui support maintaining connections as whanaunga while not undermining individual Hapū Rangatiratanga” Huhana Lyndon, Hapū Kaimahi.

Kaumātua Richard Shepard says “In March Ngā Hapū o Whangārei hosted a Wānanga, our Taumata Kaumātua discussed hosting the next Ngāpuhi Hui and agree it’s time for Ngāpuhi to meet again. We welcome the Hapū of Ngāpuhi to join us”.

At the Kohewhata Hui there was a clear agreement on the unity of purpose – that Ngāpuhi did not cede our sovereignty to the Crown which was confirmed by the Waitangi Tribunal. There was enthusiasm from the Kohewhata Hui to maintain momentum and to meet in 3 months’ time.

Chair of Whangārei Taiwhenua, Te Rā Nehua shared “Coming together as Ngāpuhi hapū provides the space for us to discuss how we can action the unity of purpose agreed at Kohewhata”.

Nicki Wakefield, Hapū Kaimahi adds “Im looking forward to continuing discussions on the unity of purpose and establishing a tikanga for working together as Ngā Hapū o Ngāpuhi”.

An informal organising committee is confirming the Hui program with more information to come.

The Hui will be held at Te Puna o Te Mātauranga Marae, NorthTec Raumanga Campus, 51 Raumanga Valley Road, Whangārei. Saturday 27 April 2019, 10am.
