Youth Climate advocacy group Generation Zero are putting pressure on the Minister for Climate Change, James Shaw, to
make a statement on the release of the Zero Carbon Bill.
At their ‘Zero Hour 4 Climate’ protest held outside Parliament in late February, Minister Shaw promised a public
announcement on the Zero Carbon Bill would be made ‘in three weeks time’.
Today the three weeks are up, however, in the spirit of the School Strike 4 Climate this week, Generation Zero have
given Minister Shaw a three day extension on the deadline. They have asked that he make any announcements on the Zero
Carbon Bill this Friday at the Wellington School Strike for Climate event.
“As thousands of Aotearoa’s rangatahi strike across the country to demand climate action, Minister Shaw will have the
opportunity to be part of making history with his announcement on the Zero Carbon Bill, and show that he cares about
youth voices.”
Kiwi school students are planning to join millions of other youth across the globe in the transnational ‘School Strike 4
Climate’ movement, inspired by Swedish Schoolgirl Greta Thunberg.
“Our generation refuses to be complicit in the destruction of the planet. We draw the line here, and demand that
Minister Shaw sits on the right side of history.”
