Christchurch students are
going on strike from school on 15th March to call on our
politicians to take urgent action on climate change.
School students from hundreds of schools in dozens of cities and towns will join students from around the world to go on strike from school on March 15 over political inaction on climate change. They will joined by adults who will also walk out for the day in solidarity with the students’ actions.
The school strike movement was kicked off last year by Year 8 students in Central Victoria, Australia who were inspired by 15 year old Swedish student Greta who started striking in August 2018 and now strikes every Friday.
Lucy Gray, age 12, one of the Christchurch strike organisers said, “We are going on strike from school to urge our Government to act and protect our future from climate change. We know the use of fossil fuels is creating a climate crisis and is causing worse natural disasters, droughts, wildfires, heatwaves and the loss of our glaciers. We only have 11 years to prevent the worst impacts of climate change, but our politicians are wasting time and putting our future in danger. We are calling on all politicians to work together to limit global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees celsius”.
The NZ school strike for climate group has also launched an open letter to the NZ Parliament which is gaining support and signatures. https://our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/climate-declaration-from-the-youth-of-aotearoa
