Hirepool with Fishing And Adventure Launch The Big Clean

Hirepool Together with Fishing And Adventure Launch The Big Clean

Over 80 per cent of New Zealanders want tougher rules to protect rivers, lakes and streams from pollution, a recent Colmar Brunton poll for Fish and Game has found.

Hirepool together with co-presenters Scott Parry and Mig Rumney from the popular TV fishing show, Fishing and Adventure are teaming up to drive a big beach clean-up initiative for National Seaweek in March. With the support and knowledge of Sustainable Coastlines, they’re going to clean up one of Auckland’s most polluted beaches - the Onehunga foreshore in Manukau.

Over the last 3 years, 12 cubic metres of rubbish have been removed from this particular coastal area from eight clean-up events. Microplastic is a major problem that requires many hands to remove.

Hirepool General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Gary Richardson says, "We’re really concerned about our waterways. Many of our customers are into their fishing and recreational water sports in a big way. So Hirepool wants to get behind Seaweek and make a big difference by cleaning up one of Auckland’s most polluted beaches. The message we want to send to all New Zealanders is that if we all come together to do regular beach clean-ups it will go a long way to rehabilitating our shores and leaving them in a better state for years to come."

Scott Parry from Fishing & Adventure says "Being on the water as often as we are, we see first-hand the effect that this growing issue has on our waterways and marine life. This is our way of giving back, but also offering the opportunity for everyone to come along and do something about reducing the levels of rubbish along our coastlines. "

The Hirepool and Fishing and Adventure Big Clean is on Saturday the 9th of March. Families are encouraged to come along to support the cause. The action starts at Taumanu Reserve, Seacliff Road, Onehunga at 9am. Attendees will be given a reusable rubbish sack and gloves to get going.

All volunteers will get a free Phoenix drink and a BBQ sausage and hopefully new found knowledge and enthusiasm to conduct their own beach clean ups in future.
