Youth Climate movements across the world are creating waves. Here in New Zealand, a crowd will march at Parliament to
demand accelerated climate action, on Tuesday 19th Feb, at 12pm.
The purpose is to remind this government that its people value Aotearoa — we want our government to prioritise
kaitiakitanga (the need for sustainable guardianship and protection). It’s time we moved forward with a Zero Carbon Act
- one that provides a safe climate future, and honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi in its development and implementation.
Here we will protest the slow progress of the Zero Carbon Bill, and the snail pace of climate action generally, from the
current and all previous governments.
The best information we have - from the IPCC 1.5°C report - tells us that we could push the planet beyond a relatively
safe 1.5°C warming if we don't halve our carbon emissions in the next decade or so.
Time is ticking - this is Zero Hour for climate action.
In New Zealand we can pass the buck for another ten years or we can take urgent action by having an ambitious Zero
Carbon Act put into law.
Right now we’re seeing the consequences of 1°C of global warming through more extreme weather. The largest bushfire
since the ‘50s rages on in Tasman, and rising sea levels affect our whanaunga in the Pacific.
