Submissions are open on the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Vesting Bill
The Chairperson of the Māori Affairs Committee, Rino Tirikatene, is calling for public submissions on the New Zealand
Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Vesting Bill. The bill seeks to transfer the assets and liabilities of the New Zealand
Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI) to the Te Puia New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute limited partnership,
which is a joint trust of iwi partners.
The bill would fulfill an agreement made in August 2017 between the Crown and trustees to introduce vesting legislation
that would provide for the transfer.
At present the NZMACI’s function is to foster Māori culture and the practice of Māori arts and crafts. The institute
also maintains and develops scenic and tourist attractions in the Rotorua district. This bill would provide for the Te
Puia New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute limited partnership to continue to fulfil these functions. It also
includes provisions for the partnership’s performance to be reported on annually.
