City Mission Welcomes Government Annoucement on Measures to Tackle Synthetic Drugs
The Auckland City Mission welcomes the government’s announcement today that it will crack down on suppliers of synthetic drugs while investing in drug related health interventions.
Auckland City Missioner, Chris Farrelly, sees the initiatives as a significant health based approach to drug use.
“It is an essential focus on practical treatment, harm reduction and prevention, as recommended by the recently released Mental Health and Addictions Inquiry and the NZ Drug Foundation. The Auckland City Mission is grateful for the recent significant government support to build new drug and alcohol treatment facilities at the City Mission and we are very pleased to see further funding allocated for additional addiction treatment services around the country,” says Mr Farrelly.
He continues, “Tragically a number of Auckland City Mission clients have died as a result of synthetic drug use and daily we see the connection of addiction with poverty, homelessness and social exclusion. Addressing these are the most important interventions as we as a nation work to bring people out of poverty and homelessness.”
