New accessibility work programme important step in breaking down barriers

The Human Rights Commission welcomes the announcement of a new government work programme focussing on accessibility.
Disability Rights Commissioner Paula Tesoriero says the announcement paves the way forward to breaking down some of the
barriers experienced by New Zealanders on a daily basis, in particular disabled New Zealanders.
“A quarter of New Zealanders are disabled. All disabled people have the right to live independently and participate
fully in all aspects of life. This means ensuring disabled people access, on an equal basis with others, to the
facilities and services that we all need to thrive,” says Ms Tesoriero.
“Currently they face a number of barriers which inhibit these rights. Accessibility benefits everyone.”
“This work programme is an important step in ensuring a more inclusive, accessible Aotearoa New Zealand. I look forward
to the conversation across New Zealand about creating meaningful change for disabled New Zealanders.
“Access Alliance has been a great advocate for an inclusive and accessible New Zealand and I applaud them for their hard
work and commitment to making this a reality.”
