Mīharo kē te Wiki o te reo Māori 2018! Māori Language Week 2018 has been astonishing!
New Zealanders from all cultures stepped out, literally, in hīkoi whakanui – parades – around the country to celebrate
our nation’s language – te reo o tō tātou whenua – and our shared Aotearoatanga – national pride.
We said ‘ahakoa iti, akona, korerotia – learn a little and use a little’. Koia anō. And that’s just what happened.
In the year ahead – ā te tau e tū mai nei - we can together further revitalise the Māori language - mā tātou katoa te
reo Māori e whakarauora:
• Whakatauhia te reo Māori ki te wāhi mahi me te hapori
Make te reo welcome at work and in the community
• Whakahautia ētahi atu ki te kōrero, ki te ako hoki i te reo Māori; whakaurua mai hoki te reo Māori ki tōu ao
Encourage others to use and learn te reo Māori; welcome Māori language into your life
• Kia tika tonu te whakahua i te kupu Māori i ngā wā e kōrero Pākehā ana
Pronounce Māori words correctly when speaking English
• Kia nui ake te ako ka kōrero ai
Learn more, and use what you know
• Ahakoa e ako ana koe, kahore rānei, e āhei ana tātou katoa ki te tautoko i te whakarauora i reo Māori
Everyone, whether learning or not, can contribute to te reo Māori revitalisation:
• Whāia te ara poutama o te reo ka tohatoha haere ai.
Keep improving your language, and share what you know
Nō reira ka nui aku mihi ki a koutou katoa e hāpai ana i tēnei taonga, te reo taketake o Aotearoa.
