Ngāi Tahu seeking direct engagement on freshwater
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu has confirmed to Ministers of the Crown that we are seeking direct engagement regarding freshwater and want to begin a discussion immediately.
Lisa Tumahai, Kaiwhakahaere of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu confirmed to Ministers that Ngāi Tahu will not be supporting Te Kāhui Wai Māori and will instead be seeking direct engagement with the Crown.
We understand the Crown is still looking to progress Te Kāhui Wai Māori, but want to make it clear that whoever is appointed to the group does not have the support of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
“As the Treaty partner in our takiwā, Ngāi Tahu are seeking direct engagement with the Crown on freshwater issues and we look forward to working with them on this important kaupapa,” says Lisa.
Lisa Tumahai also confirmed to Ministers that the Ngāi Tahu Deed of Settlement ensures that Ngāi Tahu and the Crown must negotiate in good faith before any court action, and as such confirmed Ngāi Tahu are not party to the proposed court action the media are currently discussing.
