Never enter a property where there is fire
Following the recent death of 55 year old male in a house fire in Pukekohe Fire and Emergency New Zealand are urging people to never enter or re-enter a house where there may be a fire.
In this tragic incident, the deceased entered the house and was then unable to find his way out.
John Robinson, Chief Fire Officer, Pukekohe Volunteer Fire Brigade said "Never ever go into a house where there is or maybe a fire. If there is any smoke, do not enter. The smoke will quickly overcome you, before you are able to react and get out."
In this case, the crews arrived at the property within 10 minutes by which time the fire was fully involved.
The house, which was rented, did not have a working smoke alarm. Rented properties are required by law to have a working smoke alarm installed.
In this house, candles were left unattended when the occupants left the property earlier. "It is vital that candles like all fires should be supervised at all times" said John.
John added, "It’s very important that people know how they can get out of their house, if there is a fire. Have an escape plan and a safe meeting place for everyone who is in the house."
