LGNZ corrects position on waste levy

20 JULY 2018

Local Government New Zealand have visited the offices of the Taxpayers’ Union and advised that, while they support raising the waste levy, they don’t have a specific target in mind.

This corrects a report from Radio New Zealand (cited by the Taxpayers’ Union), which stated that LGNZ are lobbying for a $140-per-tonne waste levy. The original version of the RNZ report is no longer online.

In reality, LGNZ have no maximum figure in mind as they campaign to increase the levy – so it could be even higher than $140.

The $140 figure came from the WasteMINZ manifesto, mentioned as an example of a potential levy rate.
