Generation Zero celebrates thousands of submissions to Zero Carbon Bill
Generation Zero celebrates the news that over 14,000 submissions were made to the Zero Carbon Bill during the last six weeks of consultation. Of the 14,000
submissions nearly 3,500 came through Generation Zero’s website.
“People around Aotearoa have made their voice heard loud and clear: we care about climate change and we want the most
ambitious climate law,” said Zero Carbon Act Spokesperson Lisa McLaren.
“When we launched the Zero Carbon Act campaign over two years ago, we only dared dream that this would be possible.”
“We are so proud to join a chorus of voices from all over Aotearoa New Zealand. New Zealanders from different walks of
life - from farmers and business leaders, to high school students and grandparents, all saying that we need a Zero
Carbon Act.”
“Now that the first phase of consultation has closed, we are looking forward to working across the political parties to
ensure that we have a strong, binding and enduring Zero Carbon Act that will secure a safe climate future in New
Zealand.”
About the Zero Carbon Act
What is the Zero Carbon Act?
The Zero Carbon Act is a legal framework based on the UK’s Climate Change Act 2008. It requires governments to reduce
New Zealand’s emissions year-on-year and plan towards a long-term target: zero net emissions of long-lived greenhouse
gases by 2050 or sooner.
How does it work?
The Zero Carbon Act will require future governments to set a pathway of five year ‘carbon budgets’ on track to the zero
carbon target, and produce clear plans to meet these. It will establish an independent Climate Commission to provide
expert advice on targets and policies and to monitor the Government’s progress.
Will it do anything else?
The Act will also require a National Climate Risk Assessment updated every five years, a climate change adaptation
programme, and transparent planning and reporting on New Zealand’s contributions to climate action in other countries.
