Climate Leader CEOs Misleading Their Companies

Published: Fri 13 Jul 2018 03:35 PM
Reports that CEOs of 60 of the 25,000 companies operating in New Zealand have signed up to a Climate Leaders Coalition to support “carbon budgeting” are highly misleading, according to Terry Dunleavy, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition.
“The vast majority of companies say nothing about highly-politically-charged proposals that are expected to cost our households about $7 billion per annum. The handful of CEOs who have signed up to this Climate Leaders Coalition are those who believe that ‘carbon budgeting’ will give their companies a competitive advantage. Most CEOs have declined to join because they know that any such regime will be very bad for their shareholders.
“In successful business, costly decisions are based on facts rather than fairy tales, and directors should insist that CEOs undertake careful research before recommending to their boards actions that will impose extraordinary costs on their companies,” said Mr Dunleavy.
“If the CEOs had done their homework, they would have discovered that there is no scientifically convincing evidence based on observations of the real world that demonstrates that man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, etc, can or do cause dangerous global warming.
“These CEOs seem to have descended into ‘groupthink’ and have fallen for the propaganda of Green Party co-leader James Shaw, and rent-seeking academics and scientists reliant on grants to fund their as yet unproven theories based on computer models that assume what they are meant to prove. Further, a myriad of public servants continues to propagate the scam on which their salaries depend. Any contrary discussion of the science with any of these groups isn’t countenanced. All the personnel in these groups plus our clearly uninformed politicians can say is: go read the IPCC reports. The claims of a 97% consensus among scientists that human and animal emissions of so-called ‘greenhouse gases’ are causing dangerous global warming have been shown to be highly over-exaggerated, and the very claim of consensus is all about politics and has nothing to do with science.
“Boards of the companies who have been signed up to this Climate Leaders Coalition should take urgent action to direct their CEOs not only to disclose the precise actual costs that will accrue to their companies, but also to furnish the factual science, as distinct from computerised guesswork, that will cost their shareholders dearly. If they fail, they must opt out of this expensive and futile coalition,” Mr Dunleavy concluded.
