Workers gather to picket Pak n’ Save Hastings
Butchers, bakery, and deli staff along with shop floor workers will be picketing out the front of Pak n’ Save Hastings following multiple failed negotiations on unfair pay rates.
On midday Saturday around 40 workers will be handing out flyers and speaking to customers about their woes with the company which they have found to be increasingly mean-spirited towards its low-pay staff who are on minimal pay rates. Media are invited to attend.
FIRST Union organiser Mike McNab says the company is refusing to give workers a pay rise and bargaining has broken down on at least two occasions.
“While workers are struggling because of the minimal pay, they aren’t asking for charity! They’re simply asking for fair pay for the work they do.”
Mr McNab says the company needs to recognise the value of its workers, and pay them what they’re worth.
“These jobs require skill, these workers are proficient at their jobs, and they often work very long hours.”
He says the owner needs to realise that while other supermarkets are moving towards a Living Wage, his store is lagging far behind.
“Workers are paid poverty wages, and well below the Living Wage, the owner seems to want to be a minimum wage employer.”
Mr McNab adds there’s an ethical conundrum the owner can no longer ignore.
“Workers need a pay rise in the face of increased petrol and living costs, and to meet the costs associated with bringing up a family.”
