The clock is ticking against SHA 62 and, SOUL (Save Our Unique Landscape) is proud to announce a new public
demonstration rejecting Fletcher plans to build high-cost housing on this confiscated land at Ihumātao .
Take a Stand on the Land will be hosted by SOUL on Saturday 26 May, 2-3pm, to welcome supporters to Ihumātao, and
demonstrate opposition to the proposed development.
SOUL is continuing to work tirelessly to protect land at Ihumātao near Māngere, from development by transnational
corporation Fletcher Residential Limited.
“We hope that people will turn out in numbers to send a message to Fletcher and to the Government, that this proposed
development is unjust, unwanted and unsustainable,” says Pania Newton.
The Fletcher proposal ignores the objections of mana whenua and the Māngere/Ōtāhuhu community, that the historical,
cultural, archaeological, environmental and spiritual significance of the land at Ihumātao means it should not be used
for high-cost housing as planned.
SOUL wants the public to know that Fletcher has now achieved almost all the consents required for its proposed
development. SOUL remains determined to do what it takes to encourage all affected parties to work together to come up
with a negotiated resolution to this crisis.
“Ihumātao has stories to tell about the history of our nation and provides a special gateway to the country’s
international visitors,” adds Brendan Corbett. "SOUL wants to show Fletcher, Auckland Council and the Government that we
are taking action so that future generations will know we did everything in our power to protect the whenua because we
considered it to be hugely important to our nation and to their future wellbeing.”
