By-Election Candidates And Voting Places Announced
15 May 2018 Media releases 2018 Northcote by-election
The Electoral Commission has released the names of the candidates standing in the Northcote by-election, along with a list of voting places for when voting starts.
Eight candidates are seeking election as the Northcote Member of Parliament.
Eight advance voting places will be available, including for the first time at The Warehouse store in Birkenhead, and 16 voting places will be open on election day on Saturday 9 June.
Nominations for the by-election have closed and the following candidates have been confirmed.
Candidate NameParty
BERRY, Stephen ACT New Zealand
BIDOIS, Dan National Party
CHEEL, Tricia Democrats for Social Credit
HALBERT, Shanan Labour Party
JAUNG, Rebekah Green Party
KOLONI, Kym Independent
LYE, Jeff Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party
WALSH, Liam NAP
“Now that nominations have closed, we can start to print and distribute ballot papers before voting begins,” says Anita Balakrishnan, National Manager of Voting Services for the Electoral Commission.
Overseas voting starts on Wednesday 23 May and advance voting in the Northcote electorate will start on Monday 28 May.
“There will be eight advance voting places in locations that are easy to access, where people will be able to enrol and vote,” says Ms Balakrishnan.
“We are especially pleased to be working with The Warehouse Limited to provide advance voting at their Birkenhead store on Mokoia Road.”
The Warehouse has hosted enrolment teams at its stores before general elections for many years, but this will be the first time one of its stores has hosted a voting place. Ms Balakrishnan says it’s a logical next step and will provide a convenient voting location to Northcote residents, especially over Queen’s Birthday weekend.
“We had advance voting places in shopping centres and supermarkets during the 2017 General Election and they were very successful. We’re keen to expand our relationships with retail businesses and pilot voting services with The Warehouse at this by-election,” says Ms Balakrishnan.
Enrolment and voting services will be available at the following advance voting places.
