Media statement related to Serious Fraud Office charges against ex-employee
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi is aware that charges have now been laid by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) against a former employee. These were heard in the Rotorua District Court earlier today.
The charges come after four years of investigation by the SFO.
It is important to note that there are no charges against Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi.
As soon as these allegations were raised in 2014, we responded appropriately, and the matter was referred on to the SFO.
As this is now before the court, it is inappropriate for us to comment on the specific allegations, and we need to allow the court process to proceed to a conclusion.
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi has made a number of changes to systems and processes since this was raised in 2014. We are confident in our current practises and believe they are robust.
We are disappointed at the situation, but the court is the appropriate place to hear these allegations. Our focus is on continuing to support our students, current staff and the people we represent.
