Preparing for the end of the Queen's reign
The British royal family is preparing for the end of the Queen's reign
The Commonwealth heads of government are discussing and possibly deciding who will be the next symbolic head of the Commonwealth after Queen Elizabeth.
53 Commonwealth nations - including 32 Commonwealth republics - are about to make a democratic decision about their next head.
"It is a discussion that needs to happen because the role is not hereditary".
"The situation for Kiwi’s is the opposite. The fact is we don’t get consulted on who our next Head of State will be".
"If CHOGM is discussing succession - and if the British Royal Family itself is prepared to make arrangements for after the Queen's reign –NZ should being doing the same".
"New Zealand's head of state should be a New Zealander and consensus is building in NZ that becoming a parliamentary republic is inevitable. However, transitioning the role of Governor-General into our actual Head of State things take time. It is a much needed change but it should be done right and in a fair and democratic way".
"Waiting for after the Queen's reign ends or some unspecified future date is not the way to go. NZ needs to starting preparations sooner rather than latter and take the time to do it well".
