Generation Zero Welcomes Land Transport GPS

Published: Wed 4 Apr 2018 11:42 AM
Generation Zero congratulates the Government on their draft Government Policy Statement on Land Transport.
“The Government’s plan shows they are serious about tackling the transport issues facing our country with bold action” says spokesperson Leroy Beckett.
“It is extremely heartening to see that minimising emissions from transport is at the center of the new funding priorities the government has set for transport across New Zealand. Generation Zero have been advocating for smarter and more sustainable transport since we first formed.”
“If we are committed to creating a sustainable and thriving space for all New Zealanders, revolutions in transport management and resource allocations are necessary. Bringing an emissions focus to transport policy is certainly a step towards Aotearoa New Zealand being a net-zero carbon emissions nation by 2050.”
“The car-centric way we have planned our cities over the past few decades has led to congestion and frustration. It’s long overdue we pivot to more space efficient and sustainable forms of transport that can free people from gridlock.”
Generation Zero has been advocating actionable changes that mitigate the issues presented by carbon emissions and a changing climate. Part of the focus has been on establishing frameworks that encourages New Zealand’s urban environments to become sustainable, and on providing the necessary transport solutions. These efforts have been consistently contextualised within the framework of the Zero Carbon Act, which provides the legislative base for the plan to reduce New Zealand's carbon emissions.
“The significant increases in funding for public transport, walking, and cycling are fundamental. We needed this to happen after decades of under-investment in these areas. People want viable choices, other than being stuck in a car all day”
