95bFM and University-based Big Q partner up
University of Auckland students are likely to benefit from a new content-sharing arrangement between 95bFM and the Big
Q.
Both the radio station and the Big Q (www.thebigq.org), which is part of the University-based Project for Public Interest Media (PPIM), want to expand access to independent
information. In this new agreement they will share information on their online platforms.
Lillian Hanly, 95bFM News and Editorial Director says she is excited for the station’s different audiences to have
access to different critical content.
“This relationship is particularly useful for students who are at University and looking to use those critical thinking
skills in a practical media environment that encourages independent and investigative thinking.”
The Big Q shares many commitments with bFM, says director Maria Armoudian. “We are both committed to providing
underreported issues and accurate contexts and understandings to reported issues. And we are committed to working with
students who will be responsible for the next generation of the public interest.”
The Wire on 95bFM is a weekly news and current affairs show that has a long history of undertaking in-depth quality
reporting on topics often overlooked by the mainstream media.
The Big Q focuses on big questions that underpin the developments of the day and that help explain the news. The
University of Auckland project is committed to increasing coverage of the arts, science and the humanities in the media.
“We want to try new models of cooperation, sharing, and mutual support to improve the public’s access to solid
information,” says Dr Armoudian.
Both the Big Q and bFM are keen to elevate critical thinking, raise the level of public debate, and counter the trend
towards soft news and fake news.
