A child's life is worth nothing in our Justice system
22nd March 2018
“Beating a defenceless nine-month-old baby leaving horrific facial and head injuries is child abuse at its worst" says
Sensible Sentencing Trust’s Child Abuse Spokesperson Scott Guthrie.
Scott went on to say, “for the sentencing Judge to hand down a pathetic sentence of home detention is disgusting and
sends a clear message to society that a child’s life in New Zealand is worthless”.
The Hamilton District Court yesterday heard how while alone in the room, the man struck the baby repeatedly on the face
and head and grabbed him by the chin and mouth, to stifle his cries of pain. He then forced something solid in the
infant's mouth causing a tear between his tongue and base of his mouth.
“The offending this innocent child has been subjected to is very much in line with the injuries inflicted on Moko and
little Nia Glassie. I’m just amazed the baby survived the injuries”.
The Sensible Sentencing Trust will be writing to Crown Law today asking that they seriously consider appealing this
completely out of touch none rehabilitative sentence. ENDS
