Auckland, 22 January 2018 - Global and national studies have shown that New Zealand has a weight problem with almost one in three of our adult population classified as obese. However, research released by Canstar Blue shows New Zealanders want to do something about it.

“It’s well documented that New Zealand has one of the worst obesity rates in the world but our survey reveals that people are thinking about healthy eating and are keen that things are done to encourage it. Says Canstar Blue’s Emma Quantrill. “Of the people we spoke to, 87% thought more should be done to promote healthy eating in New Zealand and 86% went as far to agree that GST should be removed from fresh produce.”

According to Stats NZ, the price of fruit and vegetables increased 4.5% in the year to December 2017 and latest reports suggest that further increases are expected in the coming weeks and months.

“From the World Health Organization to The Heart Foundation, everyone agrees that a healthy, balanced diet is the foundation of good health. With such a beautiful variety of home-grown fruit and veg in New Zealand, there should be no reason why people shouldn’t have a rainbow of colour on their plate all year round.” Continues Quantrill.

One way of keeping costs down is to buy the foods that are in season. This not only helps the household budget but ensures mealtime variety and a varied diet. In recent years, meal delivery services such as The Bargain Box have taken this approach to promote healthy eating at budget prices.

Quantrill comments:
“When we spoke to people who use meal delivery services, 64% said they thought they had a better diet as a result and three quarters said they’d tried more variety of foods. The only downside is that the majority of people thought it cost them more.”
