Family Violence Policies in workplaces must be supported by legislation, Commission says
25 November 2017: The Human Rights Commission has reiterated its support for legislation that would see family violence
policies introduced in all New Zealand workplaces.
Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner Dr Jackie Blue says that White Ribbon Day is an opportune time to reiterate
why having a family violence policy is so important.
“Domestic violence is one of the biggest human rights issues facing New Zealand. For people experiencing family
violence, the workplace can be one of the only places where they feel safe. It is vital that our workplaces are equipped
to help.
“Jan Logie’s Domestic Violence Victims Protection Bill, which passed it’s first reading earlier this year and is moving
through the Select Committee process, has the potential to enable all New Zealand workplaces to offer their staff this
much-needed support.”
“A family violence policy shouldn’t be a nice to have – it’s a need to have. This White Ribbon Day, I’d like to
encourage businesses and Members of Parliament to consider their role in ensuring this draft bill becomes legislation.
“Businesses should also remember they don’t need legislation to take action. More than anything, businesses need to have
some allowance of leave for staff members who are experiencing family violence and be in a position to connect affected
staff with the support services that they may need.
“Letting staff know that they will be supported at a time when they most need it is hugely beneficial. A family violence
policy doesn’t have to cost much, but the benefits of having one are far reaching.”
