Kim Dotcom: Caught In The Web Rockets To Top Of International iTunes Documentary Charts
Following successful festival outings, Annie Goldson's Kim Dotcom: Caught In The Web has received a great start to its VOD debut. It rocketed up the ‘Best Documentary’ lists internationally, taking the
number one spot in the USA, Canada, Germany and New Zealand; and according to the Washington Post, is now in the Top Ten
USA iTunes Independent Movies.
Director Goldson commented it is encouraging to see so many New Zealand documentaries in the international top ten
documentary lists. She says that although using (mixed) sports metaphors is not her strong point, she can’t resist:
“Dotcom successfully tackled Richie McCaw (Chasing Great) and his luxury vehicles overtook McLaren, crossing the finish line in a hat-trick that saw Caught in the Web at #1 in iTunes documentary charts.”
Kim Dotcom: Caught In The Web premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March this year and was released last week on international S-VOD platforms,
including iTunes and Vimeo on Demand, as well as on Amazon; GooglePlay; Sony PlayStation; and Xbox in some territories.
Since March, the film has had a successful film festival run, most recently showing at the Melbourne International Film
Festival, and despite it being available online, the film is still receiving festival invitations.
Annie Goldson and producer Alexander Behest (My Year With Helen (EP); Poi E) decided to release the film as widely and quickly as possible to see if the typical levels of illegal downloading
would drop. The more traditional ‘windowed’ forms of release, with delays between festival, cinema, VoD/DVD and TV
releases, makes works such as this one susceptible to infringement.
“If the film is available legally in most countries at an acceptable price, it will be interesting to see if typical
levels of infringement drop,” says Goldson, who is delighted that the film will continue to show in film festivals
around the world and at event screenings where she and others are invited along to debate some of the bigger issues the
film addresses.
Along with local interactive developers and designers DotDot, Goldson has developed a rich online resource, a repository
of free educational materials including mini-documentaries, outtakes, and edited transcripts of interviews from many of
the subjects she interviewed, including Glenn Greenwald, Professor Lawrence Lessig and Gabriella Coleman, and founder of
Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales. Moby, the singer and DJ, also makes a brief appearance.
