Party and Candidate Lists For 2017 Election

16 registered political parties and 534 candidates will be contesting the 2017 General Election.

Nominations have now closed and the Electoral Commission has released the electorate and party list candidates for 2017. Advance voting and election day voting place locations have also been finalised and released on the elections website.

Registered Parties Seeking the Party Vote

The registered parties seeking the party vote in 2017 are:

2. Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party
3. Ban1080
4. Conservative
5. Democrats for Social Credit
6. Green Party
7. Internet Party
8. Labour Party
9. MANA
10. Māori Party
11. National Party
12. New Zealand First Party
13. New Zealand People’s Party
14. NZ Outdoors Party
15. The Opportunities Party (TOP)
16. United Future

15 registered political parties contested the general election in 2014.

Candidates

A total of 534 candidates (electorate and list) are standing in this year’s election. This compares with 554 candidates in the 2014 election.

81 candidates are on the party lists only and 87 are standing as electorate candidates only. 46 electorate candidates are standing as independents or representing unregistered parties (only registered parties are eligible to contest the party vote).

The number of candidates standing both as an electorate candidate and on a party list is 366.

The electorate with the most candidates is Tauranga with 11, and the electorates with the lowest number of candidates are Hauraki-Waikato and Waiariki with 2.
The gender breakdown is as follows: 341 male, 190 female, and 3 gender diverse/not specified. In 2014 there were 390 male and 164 female candidates.

Enrolments already exceed 2014 election

Enrolments received before the rolls closed for printing on 23 August have been processed and 3,167,252 people are now on the electoral roll, well above the total number of 3,140,417 enrolled at the time of the 2014 election.

“We’re very pleased with the increase in enrolments and we expect another big jump before election day. We’re especially pleased that 16,694 voters in the 18-29 age group enrolled during August . That’s great, but there are still a lot of people who aren’t enrolled,” says Alicia Wright, Chief Electoral Officer.

“You need to be enrolled to be able to vote and have your say this election, so if you’re not on the roll already, get it sorted now. Go to our website www.elections.org.nz, or from 11 September, you can enrol and vote at any advance voting place.”

People can enrol right up until Friday 22 September which is the day before election day on Saturday 23 September, but they can’t enrol on election day itself.
