Unions Wellington endorses Peace Protests

Unions Wellington endorses Peace Protests

Last week, Unions Wellington voted in favour to support plans by Peace Action Wellington to protest the upcoming Defence, Industry & National Security Forum. Members of 9 affiliated unions were present at the meeting.

The forum is an arms fair. Some of the world's biggest arms dealers will be coming to Wellington to deal in the “cutting edge” of military technology.

“We are proud to support these protests,” says Unions Wellington spokesperson Ben Peterson.“When the health and education sectors are so chronically underfunded, it is outrageous that government money is spent on bombs.”

“We want Wellington to be a city of peace, so it’s really disappointing that council venues are being used to host those who profit from war. This event should be cancelled, and if local government won’t do it, we must support the protesters to shut it down.”

According to Peterson, unions stand for more than just wages and work conditions. “When governments go to war it’s working people who are sent to kill and be killed, why arms companies make billions.”

“Unions Wellington is proud to stand with the peace movement.”

Unions Wellington will be calling upon affiliated unions and union members to support the blockade and protests, which will be held at Westpac Stadium on the 10th and 11th of October.
